Music Teaching Tips Based on My Experience
I would probably say that I was not the only one, who got bored looking at musical notes during a Music class years ago. Perhaps, it is because children just do not get fascinated with pages of lines and notes, colored black and white. Now, that I am no more a kid, I admit that it’s still dull to look at those stuffs and I still feel the same way.
I have nothing against reading musical notes but I would just rather sing than struggle dealing with such complicated matters. Music teaching tips might help me learn music easier, but I would also need of a very patient teacher to assist me so.
When I was in grade school, I used to be a member of a drum and lyre band. I experienced playing both the lyre and the drums and found the latter easier. However, I ended up playing the lyre. It was fun especially when we won awards in exhibition competitions. We also did caroling during Christmas holidays and played in different events and occasions.
I enjoyed playing those instruments although there were times I got embarrassed when I made mistakes. There came some instances when I escaped attending band practices because I knew I would be called by our bandmaster. I did not like the feeling of receiving special attention. Worst, I got such because I messed up.
We had our band practices a group at a time. Usually, the lyrists practiced first then the drummers, or otherwise. Then, we played in a classroom as a whole – all together. Our bandmaster used different music teaching tips and strategies to help us learn music pieces easily. What was remarkable to me was that of Psychology’s Operant Conditioning.
Does it ring a bell? Or does it sound unique? I somehow have a clue how Music is related to Psychology but the other way around, I am not really sure. But I can say it was effective in my case.
Our bandmaster gave us two options: (1) we had to perform in our exhibition drills as if we were in the actual competition-meaning having minimal mistakes as possible- so we could get home early. We used to have practices a couple of whole consecutive days and those were really exhausting; or (2) he would pull our sideburns for every mistake we would commit. The former condition is a ‘reward’ while the ‘latter’ is a punishment. Of course, we would go for the reward. After all, who would want to be punished?

Composers from all eras & music as well
Since the beginning of humankind, music has been part and parcel of man’s culture. In the beginning, music was mainly used for enjoyment, religious and spiritual rituals as well as the romance and love. Since the earlier mankind is characterized by wars and different conflicts, music has played a vital role in this eras especially when drum beats were used during wars. In this way music served as a form of encouragement for the soldiers and hence helps them win in the wars and other different conflicts between the communities (Randel 1986). In this prehistoric period, the evidence of written music is very little but the use of cuneiform writings in the 6000 years in which music served as an important vehicle for civilization. This has been discovered in Mesopotamia and Sumerians in which clay tablets were used to include even the notation keys as well as the scale attesting. However, the idea that musical composers existed in this era is still debatable though most scientists believe that music has been part of our culture for along time in which it has been used for communication.
The era that followed the prehistoric era is known as the Renaissance or the middle ages era and consists of written composed music. This era constitute the music that was written between 550AD and 1550, a period that is known for the development and the advancement in all arts and other technologies (Randel 1986). The major known composer during this era is the Italian Guido who developed the musical notation in the 1033s (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Guido is considered and respected for advancing music from the traditional to the modern way of representing music in a more clearly and organized manner in Italy. He is responsible for the invention of the five line staff with respect to notation in music in which he developed the first song know as the Gregorian chant.
One single composer during the middle age era is known as Guillaume de Machaut. This was a French composer who developed several rhythms as well as publishing different books that were majorly focused on music as well as other music related arts. He utilized the work of Guido to come up with the repeated notes that had same or different patterns hence enriched the polyphonic arts in this era. He was also supported in this era by another French composer Vitry who also published several books and developed even other rhythms (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). During this era, music played a very important aspect in the culture and other religious and spiritual endeavors. Music also played important role in entertaining as well as in cultural and spiritual ceremonies throughout this era (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). However the work of Guido and Vitry, were important as they helped in the advancement of music to the next level that lead to Baroque era with more composers.
The transition between the middle age era and the Baroque era is associated with a composer known as Claudio Monteverdi whose work was mainly evident in the early 1960s. He is known for helping and engineering the transition from the middle age period to the Brogue era. What this composer did is that he set stage for many of the musicians by then by establishing the first opera in Italy thereby setting stage for most composers to come in during that time period. Unlike the middle age musical era, the Baroque musical era was mainly associated with feelings of nature as well as love. In this era, the composers had changed their message and the use of music primarily for spiritual or religious purposes was changing and most composers were now focusing on mystery as a major philosophy. However, definitive focus on religious and spirituality were evidenced especially through the work of Jonathan Sebastian in late 1600s and early 1700s (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011).
Jonathan is one of the composers in this period that is considered to have innate talent right from his childhood and was able to use his religious music to earn living and support himself. He is also recorded in history as the father of counterpoint due to his passion for the music and the use of organ and clavichord instruments (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Due to this passion, he never used different modern instruments in that era such as the pianos until he was almost sixties when he was introduced to the pianos. After his introduction to the pianos, he wrote one of the famous music “fugue” to the king Fredrick of Germany as a musical offering. This music by Jonathan is considered as one of the best music in Germany until today.
Another important composer of this era is Beethoven, who was also of German origin. Beethoven was physically challenged; however, this did not hinder him from advancing his talent in music and other arts (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). Despite the fact that he was deaf by the time he was trained by his father due to the constant boxing of his ears by his father during training on pianos, Beethoven emerged as one of the greatest composers during this era. He developed some of the best music that is listened to in many parts of the world even today and made some of the beautiful music in German and Austria. He is known to have written the nine symphonies which are considered the highest number of symphonies that had ever been written by a single composer during that time. He therefore ended up as one of the best composers whose music is still used by major audio music producers.
Wolfgang Mozart is another composer who came later in the ear and is considered as one of the most famous composer. He introduced the new styles of light and other forms of expressions including the darkness to express the musical idea. However, Mozart was well known for the classical music that he was good at. He composed most music in the earlier 1700s that majorly focused on classical styles (Kerman &Tomlinson 2011). He can be viewed as one of the composers who introduced the classical music at an era when such kind of music was not very much appreciated since they were not based on the actual events such as spiritual and religious ceremonies that were common in that era (Smith 2005). Mozart is therefore viewed as the modern musician due to his advancement of the classical music that is still influential even in the modern era. His kind of music can be linked to the current rock music which is considered by many musicians to be having certain connections to the old Mozart classical music composers. These connections are also related to the old styles of using both organs and the violins that are still used even in the today’s society of modernized classical music.
Other composers of classical music era also included Frank Joseph, Willbald Gluck, Rossini and Schubert who were composers of late 1790s and 1820s. During this era entertainment was considered more important than the expressions of feelings, cultures and the religion that were the main purposes of music in the previous eras (Smith 2005). This period was majorly characterized with many composers unlike in the previous eras due to advancement in technology as well as the ability of the composers to link their instrumentation to the music composed thereby coming up with a rhythm that was very good for entertaining their audiences. This period however was not purely focused like the previous periods since other composers like the Beethoven and Hoyden Joseph composed certain music that were more of romantic and this led to the romantic era of music.

The Best Way to Write a Song Is Not to Write a Song

It’s almost impossible to force a great song into the world. I don’t care what software you are running, it’s almost impossible to achieve brilliance without genuine inspiration. Let’s face it, music is an emotional language. You can’t intellectually or mathematically create an emotionally powerful piece of music.
If there is one rule that I work by, it is this: the best songs write themselves. Both the lyric and melodic hook will come instantaneously, will grab you by the lapel and scream “write me!”. THEN is the time to sit down and really get to work. Writing a great song is like making a sculpture. The stone is already there, you just need to bring the beauty out of it by careful craftsmanship.
Captain Hook
Think about the following phrases: “Yesterday”, “Uptown Girl”, “Maria”, “Jingle Bells”. Unless you just landed on the planet Earth, those words immediately got a melody going inside your head. A hook is where a simple phrase of a lyric and a simple turn of a melody come together and get stuck in your brain. It’s called a hook, because it catches you like a fish. I just produced the musical Man of La Mancha, and for many nights I could not sleep because of “The Impossible Dream”. Yes, because I couldn’t turn that song’s irresistable hook off in my head, dreaming was indeed “impossible”.
Hooks can be simple or complicated, but they must be clear. Beethoven, in his fifth Symphony, has a four note hook. In some songs, the hook is the whole song, repeating in a manner almost hypnotic. In others, it is something that you wait for and happens only two or three times in the course of the song. Marry the melodic hook to an evocative and clear lyric hook, such as “don’t kill me again” or something like that, and you are on your way.
Oh, I Know What You Mean
TV shows like Seinfeld were amazingly successful because so many people related to the characters. Everybody feels like George at some time. Every couple has “their song” that they relate to.
Listeners will connect to your song much more if they can relate to what is being said. You can write about situations that many people find themselves in, such as a new relationship or a changing phase of one’s life. People turn to music when they are dealing with life’s moments, so consider writing music to talk to them about those moments.
Who Done It?
People love a good mystery. They love having something unknown to look forward to. And they love it even more when you surprise them with more than they expected.
That’s a great rule for songwriting. If I start out with a lyric such as “I’ll let you live until Sunday”, I have created suspense. Who am I going to kill on Sunday, and why? Then you can tell a great story. This keeps people listening. If you then deliver a zinger of a surprise, you’ve written a great song. A song is indeed a story. It doesn’t have to be narrated, but it should make promises and reveal new surprises with each verse.
The Arc of Triumph
Have you ever listened to Ravel’s Bolero? It is a Spanish dance with one basic A-B phrase that repeats endlessly. And yet, for some reason, it is immensely popular and deeply satisfying to listen to. Why is that?
It is because Ravel build an arc. With each repetition, the instruments change, the orchestral depth changes, and eventually the piece builds to a full orchestral climax. Ravel masterfully draws the listener in through his arc of energy.
You can do the same thing in your songs. If you start off at full steam, you have nowhere to go. If you start simply, and let the song grow, you acn enchant the listener, bringing him with you on your musical journey. Just when you reach a climax, you can write a bridge that completely changes the energy. After the bridge, you come back to the refrain, and then the listener has a feeling of having come back home again. Awesome.
Consider how your song will have an arc of energy to it, and make it dynamic and dramatic. Don’t hold back!
What Was That About?
If there is one thing that really bothers me about a lot of songs, it is this: I don’t know what the heck the song is about! If it takes me more than two listens to figure out what the song is saying, something’s wrong. “Abstract” songs that only mean something to the writer or require accompanying notes are simply self-indulgent. If you want that, fine. But don’t expect it to be a hit (unless you follow its publication with a high profile murder, which I don’t recommend. Think of the families!) You are writing to say something, so say it! Don’t talk around it.
That does not mean that every song has to be simplistic. Songs can and should have layers of meaning. What I am saying is that by listening to the song once, I should clearly grasp the surface meaning. Then, each time I listen, I gain new insight and see the deeper levels. What is greater than a song that provides continuous discoveries?
Shoot the Messenger
Performance is important. Recording quality is important. Being able to sing on key, with emotion and expression, and with clear enunciation are absolutely essential. If you can’t sing well, get someone else who can. You don’t need to be Barbra Streisand, but you don’t want somebody listening and saying “that person cannot sing to save themselves” either. If you believe in the song, give it the best possible presentation.
Same goes for recording. If you know what you are doing in a home recording studio, by all means do your demo there. If not, I urge you to have it professionally done. This will do two things: 1) you will think twice about your material and make sure it is ready before putting down money to record it, and 2) you will get a recording to be proud of. Your goal is to write a hit song, so don’t torpedo your fantastic work with a bad recording.
Nobody can guarantee that the song you write is going to make you the next Big Thing. In life, there are things that we control and things that we only influence. We control the song that we write, but we only can influence how successful it will be. It’s best to focus on what we control and to write a compelling, moving, unforgettable song. Then, we will do the best we can to record it to excellence, and promote it to success.

As the game music community moves forward, several programmers and composers have teamed up to create a new resource, remixSite, which allows anyone to post video game originals or remixes for feedback. Because songs on remixSite are versioned, contributors can track their submissions across versions and help each other improve their musical abilities. This process of incremental improvement is hoped to move the game music community to even greater popularity and visibility.
